TSS PRODUCTS FOR Grout & Mortar

CONCRETE: Grout and mortar are very similar, the difference being the amount of water used in the mix. There are a number of different types of grouts and mortar, we are only dealing with those made from cement. As strong as concrete is, when used as grout or mortar it can crack, chip, erode from water and from salt, stain, produce efflorescence and other surface issues. If outside, it is vulnerable to weathering over time. Grout and mortar are very porous and susceptible to most issues if not protected. TSSPro sealants can prevent or greatly reduce these issues.

Considerations for choosing a sealer: The following are all factors for selecting a sealer. The sealer descriptions below will mention which attributes they have to help in your selection; color enhancing/change, , minimizing cooking area stains, salt-water erosion resistance, efflorescence resistance, preventing oil (cooking/motor) stains, preventing discoloring mold/algae, preventing deterioration/flaking, VOC compliance, general stain resistance, general protection.

Coverage, Number of Coats: Grout and mortarare porous and will absorb sealant; generally, two coats are recommended. Coverage will vary with the sealer selected but will be from 150 sq ft / gallon to 200 sq ft / gallon. The second coat will generally get greater coverage. Since grout and mortar are usually measured in linear feet as opposed to square feet, a little will go a long way.

All of the sealers listed below can be used on new or old concrete.

  • TSS250 – NEW-SteelcretePro, water based, both surface film and penetrating sealer, can be applied to high moisture content substrates, repels water and many stains, densifies/strengthens, prevents efflorescence, slightly darkens, natural matte finish, leaves non-stick surface that easily cleans with wind or water.
  • TSS200 – Ultra Porous; solvent based, penetrating, repels water, high performance, strong beading, will slightly darken/enhance, prevents salt-water erosion, formulated for porous substrates, self-cleaning; leaves, grass etc., tend blow/wash off
  • TSS600 – Stabilizer, water based, penetrating; repels water, strong beading, strengthens substrates, prevents efflorescence, slight darkening, slight to no enhancement, natural look
  • TSS650 – Densifier, solvent based, penetrating, repels water, consolidates and densifies, prevents deterioration, prevents efflorescence, strong beading, slight darkening
  • TSS700 – ClearSurface, solvent based, penetrating; repels water, prevents black algae (the most common), up to seven-year effectiveness, slight darkening, keeps concrete looking new

You may also want to consider:

  • TSS750 – Algae Cure, water based, surface film; repels water, prevents most forms/colors of algae (green, black etc.), up to 2–3-year effectiveness
  • TSS550 – Stain Stop, solvent based, penetrating, repels water, oil, powerful, premium stain resistance for long periods including red wine, strong beading, slight darkening.

These sealers are fine for stabilizing grout between pavers.

  • TSS300 – Wetlook Low Sheen, solvent based, surface film with penetrating silicone; repels water, oil, wine, most stains, darkens, enhances colors, gives wet look, low sheen. Can add slip grip to reduce slippage.
  • TSS360 – Wetlook Gloss to Low Sheen, water based, surface film with penetrating silicone; repels water, oil, wine, most stains, medium darkening, enhances colors, low to medium wet look, gloss to low sheen depending on the number of coats.
  • TSS400 – Wetlook High Gloss, solvent based, film forming, high performance, darkens – enhances, gloss, wet look, repels water, vehicle oils, wine, outdoor stains. Can add slip grip to reduce slippage.

For Cleaning

  • TSS010 – Cleaner, water based, concentrate, formulated for cleaning limestone, concrete, grout haze and efflorescence, removes most any stain or discoloration
  • TSS015 – Neutralizer; use after TSS010 to neutralize the surface prior to sealing
