Saltillo Tile

SALTILLO TILE:  Saltillo tile is a clay and comes in sealed and unsealed forms.  Both should be sealed.  Why apply topcoat sealer if the tile is already sealed?  Sealer provides the final cosmetic coat across the floor (i.e., a gloss or satin finish).  Functionally, it’s critical to reduce ongoing maintenance of Saltillo tile floors.  Sealer adds scratch resistance, UV protection, and extra water resistance, and it seals the grout Additionally, the final coat of sealer removes scuffs that occur to the sealer during the grouting, handling, and shipping process.

Considerations for choosing a sealer:  For unsealed tile, a penetrating sealer should be used.  A film forming sealer and be applied over a penetrating sealer if a wet look is desired. For pre-sealed tile a film forming sealer should be used.

Coverage, Number of Coats:  A penetrating sealer should get 200 sq ft per gallon, two saturation coats should be applied.  A film forming sealer will get 150 – 200 sq ft per gallon; only one coat is normally required.

Sealers for unsealed Saltillo tile.

  • TSS200-Porus Pro; solvent based, penetrating, repels water, high performance, strong beading, will slightly darken/enhance, prevents salt-water erosion, self-cleaning; leaves, grass etc., tend blow/wash off, formulated for porous substrates.
  • TSS600-Stabilizng Sealer, water base, penetrating, high performance, strong beading, strengthens substrates, may slightly darken/enhance, prevents salt-water erosion, best for porous stone.
  • TSS300-Wetlook Low Sheen, solvent based, surface film with penetrating silicone; repels water, oil, wine, many stain types, darkens, enhances colors, wet look, low sheen.  Can add slip grip to reduce slippage.
  • TSS360-Wetlook Gloss to Low Sheen, water based, surface film with penetrating silicone; repels water, oil, wine, most stains, medium darkening, enhances colors, low to medium wet look, gloss to low sheen depending on the number of coats
  • TSS450-NEW, IMPROVED-Travertine Professional, water based, both surface film and penetrating sealer, contains slip grip, greatly reduces slipperiness when wet or dry, repels water and many stains, slightly darkens, natural matte to low sheen finish.
  • TSS400-Wetlook Gloss, Solvent based, film forming, high performance, high solids, darkens – enhances, gloss, wet look, repels water, oil, wine, etc.
